Led by Queensland Unions (QU), the Queensland Women Rise (QWR) project is a 12-month initiative focused on improving gender equity across Queensland’s construction, transport, and maritime industries. Funded by the Australian Government, the project is trialling scalable, evidence-based strategies that support women’s attraction, participation, and retention in traditionally male-dominated sectors.
Our work combines tailored research, tool and resource development, and education and training delivered through industry pilot sites. The learnings from this project will be captured in a final report with key recommendations designed to help upscale gender equity initiatives across the target industries. Success relies on the support of employers committed to building better workplaces and unions standing with their members. Together, we’re creating a future where every worker is welcomed, respected, and supported, no matter their gender.
Our highly experienced team includes Workplace Engagement Leads (WELs) who come directly from the industries we partner with. They bring first-hand understanding of what works and what doesn’t. Our approach is evidence-based, collaborative, and grounded in workers real lived experiences.
Working alongside unions, workers and employers, the QWR project focuses on practical, inclusive initiatives to improve:
Access to more flexible rosters,
Access to safe, properly resourced facilities, and
Respectful communication and workplace culture.
The changes we pursue are designed to make workplaces stronger, safer, and better for everyone, not just women.
